Whilst the United Kingdom’s approach to refugees has never been admirable, things look like they may be about to get worse. The government’s Nationality and Borders Bill, often referred to as the ‘Anti-Refugee’ Bill, passed its third reading in Commons in December, and is now in the process of making its way through the House of Lords. Beyond the reprehensible powers it will grant the government to strip someone of their UK citizenship without telling them, the bill will also create a two-tier system of refugees and asylum seekers. This will likely lead to the criminalisation of those entering the UK in search of help via nonofficial government routes.

Sadly Labour in its current form is not much better, with Kier Starmer criticising Priti Patel (of all people) last year for failing to back up her “strong language” by taking action to prevent migrant crossings in the channel. A million miles away from an institution that will be of any help, chances of a Westminster solution anytime soon seem slim to say the least.

There are still glimmers of hope. Scenes in Glasgow in May last year of crowds swarming to block an immigration van highlight the small wins collective action can bring. Likewise, there are numerous charities across the UK that are fighting for the rights of refugees, and for our second release we’re excited to be supporting such an organisation, Refugee Action.

All proceeds from the sale of this compilation will be donated to Refugee Action, and will help them provide crucial support for refugees and asylum seekers, and fight the Nationality and Borders Bill.
